Mmmm...Brisket.

L'shana Tovah!

So good to see Judith, eat some good food, and hang out with the fam...mostly in the kitchen.

Judith and I figured out how to knit this scarf. It's really easy - e-mail one of us for details!

How did Jack and Teddy ring in the new year, you ask? Well, Jack had free run of the house for a whole wekend. We're pretty sure he stayed upstairs in our bedroom the whole time! Teddy got a vacation at Your Dog's Best Friends, which is a cageless kennel just down the street from us. He spent the Friday before we left there, just to get used to the place. We stopped by to check on him before we headed to the airport and he did the craziest thing! The place has half-doors - they often leave the top half of the door open and the bottom closed so that the dogs stay contained, but in view. When Teddy saw us walk by, he dashed over to the door, threw his paws up on the bottom half of the door - it was about 5 feet tall! - and then he proceeded to use his arms to physically pull all 80 lbs.of him up over the door. He was SO determined, he was shaking - using every ounce of his strength - and he would have made it, but we opened he door to hug him goodbye. Now that's love...and a great example of how strong he is and why I'm no match for him!

Brunch on Bonnie!

Last weekend, Mom and Jim came to visit and meet Ted. The first thing Jim did when he got to the house was give Teddy some wasabi peas I bought him for his own pain and delight!

Bonnie - we used what was left of the
Bittersweet gift card you got us last Xmas to treat ourselves to brunch! Thanks!

For your entertainment, here are some pics of Teddy watching football under the coffee table and Jim's alternative to plumber's crack:

Congrats to the O'Jervises!

Teddy's Doing Alright...

...so day care never ended up taking Teddy to the vet, but everyone now thinks that the poop issues were stress related and we are all clear for him to be boarded this weekend...

...keep your fingers crossed that he has a happy new year...

...and on that note, we're wishing you all a happy new year...at least to the jews...ok, to everyone...celebrate responsibly...

...here's to a poop-free blog for 5767...

Losing My Mind

Last night was the worst pet night ever. I must admit, I shed a few tears.

We're making the trip to Orlando for Rosh Hashanah this weekend and we'd decided we were going to board Teddy at a cageless kennel for the weekend. The (sucky) vet we saw last week said he was up-to-date on all of his vaccinations, so we thought we met all of teh kennel requirements. Well, the kennel looked at his file and said he was missing one and, not having much time before we leave on friday, I made him another vet appointment for yesterday evening to get the shot. Then we learn that it takes 3-5 days for the vaccine to be effective - which means we might not be able to board Teddy at all. Adam left work early anyway to take him for the shot, hoping it would all work out.

I'd made Jack Bauer an appointment with the vet for the same night (in advance of the Teddy fiasco) because his eye has gone crazy. Again. Jack's appointment was an hour after Teddy's, so I had to leave work to go get Jack and get him there by 6:40. The vet was 35 minutes behind schedule. At 7:15, we began our appointment, and 10 or 15 minutes later it was over. There was nothing the doctor could do for us, so she referred us to another doctor. I asked if it was possible to weigh Jack because I was nervous he wasn't eating enough because of the stress of Teddy. Good thing I play a vet on TV - turns out he's down to 7.5 pounds from 10. At 7:30, I began what would become a 55 minute wait just to pay $55 for the non-appointment. I had the worst headache EVER, was starving, frustrated, exhausted, and had a terrified cat in tow.

By the time I got home, the dog was going crazy and had shredded Adam's favorite pants. Teddy's weird insanity is new and unwelcomed. How can he be so good and so psycho at the flip of a switch? Teddy was in his crate and I was holding Jack, when usually even-keeled Jack flipped out and attacked my head to get away from (caged) Ted! My face just crumpled up and I cried like an idiot for a few minutes. Teddy was a loud pain in the butt the whole rest of the night.

Adam dropped Teddy off at the cageless kennel place this morning for "orientation" - how ridiculous?! They just called and told us that - look away if you have a weak stomach - there is blood and other icky stuff in his stool. Great. Adam tried to call the vet to ask: a) is this a result of yesterday's vaccination, b) why they didn't catch whatever this is the first time we paid $30 to have his poop smeared on a slide, c) why he just had an expensive "check-up" last weekend that consisted of a lot of talking and not a whole lot of "checking up" - and now he's potentially too ill for us to leave him with a kennel for our trip to Florida.

Luckily, the guy at A Dog's Best Friend is the only nice, sane, competant pet care person in this town. He's actually driving Teddy to the vet as we speak for an emergency appointment.

What if he's sick? And sad? What if we can't board him this weekend? What if Teddy and JAck can't get along? What have we gotten ourselves into?

Click here to e-mail her and tell her you knew she could do it! (I'm talking about Florida Emily Williams, not DC Emily Williams!)

2. Adorable Sarah Marks (Jacobs) is pregnant! Click here to e-mail her congrats! (I'm talking about Miami Sarah Marks, not my adorable baby neice in Ft. Lauderdale with the same name!)

3. Kelly Davis (Davio) lives in the middle of nowhere! She sent me this pic (below) of her neighborhood in Barstow, CA. She and Ramon are such good sports! Hang in there, guys! Teddy Finally Likes A Toy!

...and here's proof! Mom and Jim are in town right now and they brought a fun rope/tennis ball toy. Seriously, we've tried a TON of toys and chew things - and this is the first one he's even remotely interested in. He even fetched a little!

Too bad that within the first half hour of this discovery, we got his toy stuck up in a tree - about 30 feet in the air.

That's ok, Teddy would rather put his head in a bucket anyway.

Bob Loblaw is missed.

If Bob Loblaw had a blog, you wouldn't be able to say the name of his blog ten times fast. That is assuming that he named his blog "Bob Loblaw's Blog." I think that is a safe assumption to make.

How the hell does Arrested Development get cancelled, but The King of Queens manages to become the longest running non-cartoon sitcom currently on the air ? I won't get into politics, but I have a feeling that this same phenomenon explains 2000 and 2004.

I realize this post is outdated by about a year. I don't care.

Overheard in the DC Metro Area

WHY I LOVE DC...

Cute Old Man Sitting on the Sidewalk: "Nice lady, do you have any spare change?"
Me: "I'm sorry - I don't have any cash!"
COMSOTS: "That smile is enough for me!"
Me: "Wait - you're wearing a Cowboy's hat?"
COMSOTS: "Yeah, I know. It's all they had at the shelter. I guess you have to take what you can get."

WHY I LOVE DEL RAY...

Me (pulling ferociously on Teddy's leash): "No nono NONOnoNONOnoNOOOO!!!!!"
Man Who Runs the Frame Shop by Our House: Walks out on his porch and toward his car, hands full. Notices Teddy and me.
Me: "Sir, my dog is actively crapping on your lawn and I just used my last bag!"
MWRTFSBOH: "It's cool. I have two dogs. I'll go get a bag."

How cute are our nieces?

Here are Sarah and Danielle, apparently attempting a self-portrait. Are these two beautiful kids or what?

Thanks to Brett for sending the photo along. Thanks to Risa who is probably responsible for their good looks!

Introducing Ted Theodore Logan

It's official! Teddy is home! ...and he's the best! He's ENORMOUS and sloppy and adorable.

He's really powerful - so much so that we had to get a special leash called a gentle leader so that I could walk him. He was dragging me all over the place!

We brought him home on Friday night and have been taking him out for a lot of walks. It seems like every family in our neighborhood has a dog, so he's had lots of company. Everywhere we go, Teddy makes a new dog friend.

Yesterday, he played with our neighbor's golden retriever, Dawson. They got pretty rowdy - and managed to break their kids' badminton set. Great. Somehow I think that's just the tip of the iceberg!

Teddy had a really busy day today. He met a bunch of dogs on his morning walk to Mancini's, hung out with the Kotuby twins (at left) and their dog Rommel in their back yard, ate squirrels from the Dairy Godmother, and went for a little run in the evening.

This afternoon, Adam and I tried to get him interested in a frisbee - which seemed like a good idea at the time. He got REALLY excited after the 4th or 5th throw and decided to jump, getting about 3 feet of air, and tackle me. Ouch. Later, he accidentally head butted me in the face and bloodied my lip. I was considering posting a photo, but I'll spare you. He has NO idea how big he is! He's tried sitting in Adam's lap a few times - he really thinks he's a tiny puppy!

Right now he's out cold on the living room floor, warming our feet.

And then there's Jack Bauer.

Fearless Jack has turned out to be a fraidy cat. He's spent the past two days in our bed. He doesn't seem too stressed out - but he is pretty curious about Ted. He's ventured downstairs a few times and has excited Teddy - but has ultimately run back up the steps every time.

He got really gutsy about an hour ago and leapt over the baby gate we have protecting the stairs and crept up next to Teddy while he was sleeping. Teddy woke up, looked at Jack, put his head back down, opened his eyes again - realized he wasn't dreaming - and sprang into action! Hopefully Jack will be brave enough to try again tomorrow!

I really hope Jack can muster enough courage to lay open Ted's nose one good time before Adam and I have to go to work on Tuesday. Their relationship is really the last question mark lingering out there about Teddy's adoption. We know it will work out, but it's really heartbreaking in the mean time.

We appreciate the encouragement of Judith, Chuck & Becky, Mike & KaraAnne, Katherine & Rob, and Becca & Brad.
